There is no hard and fast rule on this as it depends on a set of variables including:
  1. Size of your class
  2. Length and frequency of your music sessions
  3. Ability levels within the class

In each Year Course there is a video in the Welcome to the Course Journey at the Start on how the course is structured. You should watch that. You shouldn't feel you have to get through the whole Year Course in the year if that isn't right for your class.

Generally each Journey should last between 2 and 4 weeks and you should try and progress through the material at the speed that suits your classes learning journey and don't get stuck on something too long because you and the children enjoy it. You can use those favourite activities though as rewards for good behaviour and for brain breaks. But keep moving forward and try and do some kind of performance - even if it is only to a teddy bear or a video camera - at the end of each journey.

On the other hand it is important to recognise when the class needs to slow down a bit and work at something because you will see real improvements by sticking at something while children are learning and dealing with BOIP.  If it involves improving performance (eg singing or playing instruments together in time) remember to use the 2 class trouble shooting techniques - SAY CLAP PLAY and SPLIT CLASS LISTEN & PLAY. NB There are videos on these if you need to refresh. Then you will feel the joy of playing music together as a class and hearing and feeling the improvement together. That is a very positive experience individually and as a class.

Sometimes teachers get stuck on something fun, familiar and popular, and sometimes they move through material too fast - for example when introducing instruments, take your time in exploring the name, feel and sound of the instruments. Music and instruments are a great way to explore turn taking, listening skills, giving and receiving feedback, respecting other people and rules, and working in groups  - make sure you follow the USE IT AND LOSE IT RULE of instrument management. SO taking your time helps children to get familiar with the instruments and learn all these other PSD elements as well. It is important to get children to associate instruments with a calm quiet energy in the classroom as well as music making and fun.

So in summary as a general rule between 2 and 4 weeks per journey. Keep moving and don't get stuck on fun popular activities - but don't go too fast for the class especially when they are learning and needing to slow down. Find your own speed - and remember doing performances at the end of each journey is a fantastic thing to do.

Good luck.
